Since 2016 Gee has been collecting rare matchbox covers predominantly from frequent visits to Spitalfields Market in London’s East End. Dating from C. 1900, the majority of the collection focuses on matches from England, Sweden, China and Japan. First illustrated over 100 years ago, these tiny mass-produced disposable objects have been digitally revised by Gee, giving them a new lease of life at 100x magnification. The sculptures, composing of a ply cabinet with gravel strike strips and suede-tipped pine matches can be wall-mounted and are made to order.
